Shortly after Heather’s parents got married, they bought this love seat (manufactured in ’82). While Heather was in college, she rescued the couch, and promised to take it off her parent’s hands. I first met the couch when I acquired it and moved to Austin in my little 400 sq ft efficiency apartment. When we got married it stayed with us, but didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the house. Being much loved by a family of four and being almost thirty years old, we decided to re-upholster the love seat. As designers we started the project with a simple re-upholstery job, but ended with practically a new couch.

Heather and I liked the idea of doing something a bit different to the couch, and thought about building nice arms that were also the legs out of solid wood. Talking to our friend Chris, who’s dad owns a custom millworking company, we realized it was possible. As Chris acting as our fabricator, we built and upholstered the couch over a two month span. We got to take a break from our computers and work with wood, planning, jointing, sanding, cnc-ing, chiseling, gluing, sanding some more, and plenty of sewing.
